It’s easy to feel confident when you have a Highlight-reel coaching resume’. But any self made coach will tell you that it’s not WHAT your done, but HOW you did it that matters most.
Many coaches may not have common personality traits, but they do share a small set of similar psychological characteristics. I believe there are 3 common characteristics shared by the successful coaches. (I am sure there are more than 3 but if I wrote them all now, there would be nothing for me to write about another day!).
1. PASSION. A lot of the early “magic” comes from the coaches passion. Infectious enthusiasm can get outsiders to buy into an idea early on. Those “outsiders” are the parents, prospective athletes and other coaches. BUT- if left unbridled it will leave the coach looking skyward, while ignoring the obvious obstacles at eye level.
2. CONFIDENCE. This key characteristic can carry a coach a long time. But the coach has to be able to walk the walk as well as talk the talk. Merging high confidence and strong passion can be dangerous.
3. REPRESENTATIVENESS. The ability to reference past experience in the gym against the current challenges facing you can help a coach overcome struggles at hand.
Balancing PASSION, CONFIDENCE and REPRESENTATIVENESS is the critical art for a coach to have.
