This year we hosted Gym Momentum Camp at Yellow Jackets Gymnastics in Boston. I was more than a little nervous because of new location and all the logistics that went into it.
The ENTIRE Korman family and the staff at Yellow Jackets were terrific hosts. There was not one thing that I ever wanted or needed that was not taken care of.
The gymnasts and their coaches as well as Gym Momentum staff all stayed at a local hotel. Accommodations were great and the hotel was in a very convenient locations.
My goal was to deliver quality instruction for BOTH gymnasts and Coaches. We were full with over 100 gymnasts and 30 plus coaches attending . The energy was incredible.
Gymnasts attending camp were from:
New Hampshire
Maine
Massachusetts
New York
Texas
Connecticut
New Brunswick, Canada
Newfoundland, Canada
Alberta, Canada
Argentina
Reykjavik, Iceland
I pride myself at putting together a world class staff.
As I said, I think the energy and enthusiasm that my staff had really was infectious to all the coaches and gymnasts. Each day we had 5 rotation in the morning (Olympic events plus dance) and 5 Rotations in the afternoon (Olympic events plus photo shoot) then a 45 minute open workout.
As a coach- I always was frustrated when gymnasts from my club attended a camp were were thrown for skills they either were not ready for or that were not taught in a progressive manner. Gym Momentum staff worked closely with all visiting coaches so that they knew what drill we were doing and what was the next step. Each night we had a Q and A session with coaches to answer any questions they might have and share our philosophy.
I believe the comments made by coaches that attended say it all:
Hi Tony,
I need to let you know that this was such a great experience for all my kids, staff and parents. Thank you for putting something together that was fun, educational for the kids & coaches, and that fired up my girls so much that we’ve added on an extra practice for this week.
As you know, we’ve been rebuilding and restructuring. Every year gets better, and opportunities like this are such a blessing. We had eyes, ears, and minds open all weekend, coaches & kids, and will 200% be back next year.
Amazing job, please take a moment and be proud of your and the staff’s hard work, and (maybe) take a nap!! We’ll see you at congress!

I have to say that Gym Momentum has been by far the best training camp that my team has been to. It was well rounded with education for myself and for my athletes, and there is nothing better than that. Your staff, as well as yourself, were extremely approachable, helpful and knowledgeable. We are all ready to attack this summer’s training with gusto! 🙂

It is a pretty crazy schedule and it will fill in even more. If you would like me to do a clinic for you at your gym, PLEASE, do not wait too long. I have very few open dates.
If you are coming to one of my lectures, courses or clinics- I have things scheduled pretty tight and I do not know if I have actually scheduled time to EAT. Please bring me a cookie or a piece of fruit.
This last weekend I was up in Montreal for Gymnix International. It was a truly great competition for all levels. There were 4 different clubs there who I consult with through out the year and I was SO happy to see them compete and help out where I could. As a gift for the gymnasts and coaches I worked with I brought T-shirts for the gymnasts and polo shirts for the coaches.
Someone asked, “What is Gym Momentum?” and “Can I get one of those T-shirts?”
Answering the second question first. At this point Gym Momentum apparel is NOT for sale. It can only be earned at a training camp or clinic.
WHAT IS GYM MOMENTUM?
The idea for Gym Momentum started at a camp I used to work at. After long days in the gym we would hang out at night and continue the gymnastics discussion. A coach would come in and ask a question about something they struggled with in the gym that day (or a problem back at their home gym). Now there are 6 or more pretty smart gymnastics minds all problem solving. Talking technique, drills, common cues and common mistakes. When we are problem solving, we are ALL equals.
The FEELING I want for Gym Momentum is coaches working together for a common goal. Sharing their knowledge and experience.
If you have a question- ASK IT. If you have an answer, GIVE IT.
I have some great coaches, physical therapists, personal trainers, sports psychologists, business minds and sports scientists who regularly share and contribute. I couldn’t (and wouldn’t) do this without them. I am just not that smart!
So get involved, keep the momentum going and become part of the Gym Momentum community.
We will soon begin selling videos from the Gym Momentum website. This is just another way we can share gymnastics knowledge.
Many people have already booked a Gym Momentum clinic. Whether for business consultation, recreational or pre-school program or a team clinic. If I can not do it or I feel one of my other coaching friends is more qualified, I will help get you in touch with them.
12/30/2013. As most people were getting ready for New Years Eve celebrations Gym Momentum Camp coach Jamie Donkin and I traveled to Bow, NH where we did a one day clinic at Granite State Gymnastics Center.
Although the clinic was geared toward OPTIONAL LEVEL gymnastics they had some pretty talented level 4 and 5s. This worked out great because we were able to show different stages of development. Where a drill starts and what skill, long term, it is for.
Having the two of us together was great because although we are very like minded, we do see things differently.
We covered:
Conditioning for Success
Basic Tumbling (this was a general basic tumbling workout covering basics for all events)
Twisting Drills
Double Salto Pass Drills
Then we divided into 2 groups for Bars and Beam.
On Bars I covered Casting and swinging. With one of the groups we did dismounts and lead up for Tkatchev and Shoposhnikova. I stressed the importance of the DOWN SWING as I was seeing many girls break shape to early. We used a few floor bar drills and the “Forester Bar” from Tumble Trak to show those shapes.
The other group covered a variety of in bar skills and lead ups. I think it is important for each gymnast to understand where each skill and drill leads. We broke down front hip circles, mill circles and seat circles so the girls could see the importance of each.
I was very impressed with the coaches attention to detail. Really wanting to see things done correctly. Not just “Throw and go” .
T.R.
(From Jamie) On Beam one of the main things we discussed for the younger group was landing stability for leaps and jumps. I wanted to help create strength in the ankles as well as confidence in the athlete for their landing position. I gave them a series of stretch jumps and landing positions to go over.
With the older group we focused a little more on full extension through legs for acro series as well as high lighting landing shapes unique to individual athletes for their strengths and/or weaknesses.
The group as a whole were great! They were very eager to learn and I was most pleased with the athletes asking questions ready to improve their own gymnastics. What I like about the coaches is that they were very thorough in trying to comprehend the new drills and techniques and were discussing when to sit down to create a cohesive front for applying these new drills within the gyms curriculum.

At the end of the clinic we sat with the coaches and talked to them about becoming Failure Tolerant coaches and to take a systematic approach. Jamie and I covered a lot of ground. It would be impossible to cover it all every day. Get a plan. Stick to it.
Interested in having a Gym Momentum Clinic at your gym? Contact Me! We will shape the clinic around your needs. I have a number of coaches through out North America who can do the clinic.
I am often in Europe and available to do clinics there as well.
So many things to be Thankful for, my family. My gyms, My side projects. I am not going to bore you with much of that crap.
I had a great Thanksgiving yesterday. My family spent it with Ivan Ivanov and his family. Lots of laughs, stories, and of course food.
I consider Ivan a brother. Although we grew up continents apart, our lives share similarities. His friendship is something I am very thankful for.
Last Week I was able to have breakfast with another friend who has recently moved to the area. She and I share many of the same tastes in music, humor and literature. I am Very Thankful that she has moved to the East Coast where I get to see her more often. I look forward to many more conversations with Jamie.
Just over a week ago Rebecca Sykes was here with her daughter and a few of her gymnasts. We had a great week of training and I was so happy to show them the area. Becca is an amazing coach, photographer and friend.
At my camp I try very hard to put together a great staff. I am VERY, VERY selective with the coaches I hire. I need not just great technical coaches and good spotters, I need personality. I need a TEAM. We are all a little crazy, a little off. BUT we get it. We are all there for each other. We have a poster up that says “We put the FUN in DysFUNctional”. It was all really summed up when one of our new coaches, Katie Ouelette, said, “I have always felt like I didn’t fit in. No one understood my passion for gymnastics, my dedication to the kids. But here, I fit.” All I could reply was “Welcome to the Island of Misfit Toys”.
I am so very Thankful for my camp family. You know I love each one of you. You know I think you are amazing coaches but more important, AMAZING PEOPLE. I am very lucky to have you in my life. You inspire me to work hard. Your presence raises the bar.
Thank you to everyone. Now, Go be Amazing.
