My friend Arun Kumar Jayan (ALL THE WAY FROM INDIA!) shares another drill. This time for basic body shaping for back layout position.
Front Aerial Drill
I have always loved front and side aerials. Not just for their artistic enjoyment but for the leg drive that it teaches.
Here is a drill that showed really good results with this young lady from Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
W200 Course Metro South Gymnastics. Canton MA
I will be teaching a USAG W200 Course at Metro South Gymnastics Academy in Canton, MA
Register through USA-Gymnastics
This is a live, six-hour, hands-on training course designed for school age, pre-team and Level 1-4 coaches. This is a NEW course developed for pre team, level 1-4 coaches and even school age recreational coaches. Course topics include warm ups, conditioning, lesson planning, hands on spotting and lecture for all Olympic events. This is a great hands on experience of drills and skill progression with instructors demonstrating practical examples of coaching level 1-4 gymnastics.
The W200 Development Coaches Course: HOTD has been developed to:
Enhance the status of beginning level competitive gymnastics programs throughout the United States.
Establish certificate program requirements which will help identify competent pre-team and competitive (Level 1-4) gymnastics coaches.
Provide appropriate skills, drills and techniques for entry level competitive coaches.
Help standardize pre-team and entry level competitive gymnastics teaching throughout the United States.
Provide resources, instructional materials, and assistance at levels 1-4 coaching
Provides Hands on Spotting on all four Olympic Events.
U200 Development Coaches Course: Sports Science (online) is a companion to W200: Development Coaches Course: Hands on Training (HOTD). It is highly recommended that you complete U200 prior to W200. However, it is not a requirement to take U200 first. U200 covers the sports science aspects of coaching this level athlete including nutrition, biomechanics, injury prevention and psychology.
Attendance to the W200 course is eligible for 6 hours of CPE credit.

Tumbling drills from Iceland Gymnastics Course.
Thanks to Rebecca Sykes who uploaded various parts of my course that I taught for the Icelandic Gymnastics Federation.
Here are some tumbling drills.
Twisting Drill for Gymnastics
Rebecca Sykes shared this great drill. We have all gotten stuck with a kid or two needing something to fill the gap in twisting.
A+ for creativity! [Read more…]

Developmental Twisting for Gymnastics Part 8
Developmental Twisting Part 8.
Wow- It has been a LONG series of posts to get to here. Certainly not a complete list of drills.
We like to teach all twisting on tramp in 1/4 increments. EXAMPLE: In order for a gymnast to know where a 1 1/2 is to punch front or step out of, they need to know where 1 1/4 is to prepare to punch.
This video shows a gymnast twisting up. Doing a layout 1/1 twist and then doing jump 1/4 turns. In the course of twisting I believe that it is important to also twist back down. This is another thing we do to help kids from getting “the twisties”

Developmental Twisting for Gymnastics Part 7
Developmental Twisting Part 7
Here is a pretty cool drill that we use for both Vault (Handspring full using a single arm drop) and tumbling where they drop both arms.
Smaller gymnasts can use a vaulting board in front to add spring. Adjust the angle of the mat so they are in control of the roll.

Developmental Twisting for Gymnastics part 1
Developmental Twisting Part 1
This will be the first in a series of articles and videos on Twisting Technique. I get a feeling I will be revisiting this page and updating it often.
If you cannot explain it simply, you do not understand it well enough. – Albert Einstein
I really try to keep it simple. Use one basic technique for front and back twisting that will also transfer to other events.
A couple of rules that I follow.
– Twist the SAME direction front and Back
– Teach a straight arm twist
– There is no substitute for a good layout shape.
– Teach a LATE twist.
WARNING- 2 conflicting statements below!
A LEFT round off is a RIGHT twist. As you do a LEFT round off your RIGHT shoulder drops back. If you are doing a Back Layout and twist RIGHT your Right shoulder drops back.
In general I like to teach a left twist to a left roundoff and a right twist for a right roundoff. This allows the gymnast to more easily do a step out – out of a twist into a roundoff or front handspring. (This does NOT work all the time. It is just a place to start).
Here is my first step in teaching twisting. Teaching the gymnasts straight arm drop and 1/4 turns.
The second drill is seat drop side roll over. This simulates front twisting.
