Swing Half Turn Dismount Progression
With the amount of quality videos Jason Mortimer puts out, you wonder if he has a life out of the gym. LOL- who are we kidding. Of course he doesn’t have a life! You should follow him on youtube.
And if you want to see him in person- he will be at Gym Momentum week long camp this summer.
Underswing Dismount
Jason Mortimer from Bounce Gymnastics in Michigan shares a great video and drill for undershoot dismount. You should really follow him on youtube.
The undershoot is a very important step in a clear hip progression.
Jason will be working at my gymnastics camp this summer! I am very excited to have him on staff.

Overshoot drill with HEAVY spot
Obviously not a drill every coach can do.
It’s an easy way of drilling the one-arm release with bigger, heavier kids and getting them comfortable. If you’re going to pause them, holding them by the hips/waist requires arm strength. With this particular spotting method, my arm is pretty much buttressed in such a way as to eliminate the need to exhaust (or injure) my bicep.
As the high-to-low transition gets faster, the standard method of guidance spotting at the chest/hips/waist/thigh takes over.
OVERSHOOT DRILL AND PROGRESS
My friend Rebecca sent me a text a few weeks ago looking for a drill to help one of her gymnasts with her overshoot on bars.
One of my “go to” drills recently has been this drill on trampoline. She has a T-shirt between her ear and shoulder to keep her head in line. The gymnast MUST stay tight otherwise they “splat”.
Ideally she should only turn just past 1/4. My experience is that gymnasts tend to over twist which causes a flat over shoot and leg separation.
Tkatchev Drill Success
I spent a great deal of time this last summer doing clinics all through North America. I recently received a video from my friend Rebecca Sykes from Edmonton, Alberta Canada showing me the success her gymnast Paige had with the drill.
This is a drill I use to help the girls turnover and see the bar as they catch.
It’s always good when things work out! At least she wasn’t on Crash of the week!.

Drill with Forster Bar from Tumbl Trak
I’ve really had a great time using the FORSTER BAR from Tumbl trak. It is one of the few drills we use every day from Level 4 and up. It helps with strength, teaches kids when they need to shift their wrists. At the South Florida Camp that I did, Steve Arkell used rolled up wash cloths to keep the girls head neutral on a lot of drills.
I have just combined the two.
Handstand Flat Back to Front Handspring Vault
In the current (2012) USA Gymnastics program gymnasts compete a Handstand Flat Back on Vault. There is a lot I like about this vault because it is pretty easy you can concentrate on positioning on the vault board AND it gives you time to work “other stuff”.
It is a pretty big jump (no pun intended) from the Level 4 Handstand Flat Back to the Level 5 Front Handspring. So it is important to establish drills with these athletes that will help them with the transition. Here are some of the drills we do to help them with the transition.
